Shop intelligence: local AI for machine shops

Compumachine is building a local intelligence system for machine shops: one small computer that sits in your shop, reads the records you already keep, and tells you about trouble before it turns into scrap. Your data never leaves the building. It runs with the internet unplugged.

We have sold machine tools to New England shops since 1980. This is the next thing a shop needs from us: not another machine, but a way to get more out of the ones on the floor and the people who run them.

What it does

Catches tool drift early. It reads the inspection or CMM export your shop already produces, one row per measured feature, and watches each feature on each machine and tool. When a dimension starts walking toward its limit, it flags it while the parts are still good, and says what to check first.

Keeps an honest record. Every flag, the rule that fired, who confirmed it, who signed off and when, all kept on the box. That record is what a quality manager and an auditor want to see.

Answers from your own shop. The same box can hold what your senior people know, from their own words, and answer a new hire’s question the way they would. It is how we are building Dave’s Apprentice, the assistant coming to this site.

Why it stays in your building

  • Defense and controlled work. Shops under ITAR or CMMC can’t send part data to a cloud AI service. This box doesn’t send it anywhere.
  • Your data stays yours. Nothing is uploaded to train someone else’s model. Unplug the network cable and it keeps working.
  • No connection to your machines. It reads exports. It never touches a control, a program or an offset.

How a pilot starts

  1. Send one export. A month or two of inspection data from one machine, the file you already produce.
  2. We back-test it on your own history. You see which flags it would have raised, and the scrap or rework it would have caught.
  3. Then decide. If the back-test earns it, the box goes on your floor, standalone, on the machine and parts you choose.

We are taking a small number of pilot shops in New England now. We run the same box at Compumachine first, on our own work.
